On a side note, does anyone know what the official WT position is on using Viagra or similar medications? If not, then maybe it's time for some 'new light' on the matter?

How Did You Become An Atheist?
by NewChapter insince there seem to be a number of threads in this spirit, i'd like to ask how others became atheists.
for myself, i learned some things that made me understand the bible wasn't true.
i looked deeper, and it became even more unlikely.

For me it came when I was making a personal examination of the more fringe religions, not only JW, but Mormons, Scientologists, etc. It's easy to belittle JWs with their 1914 and Faithful and Discreet Slave doctrine because it all happened so relatively recently, and 1914 is a well documented year. Russell's writings have survived, and his fantasies are right there in print. Mormonism can be debunked by the very fraudulent nature of it. Joseph Smith manufactured a language (Reformed Egyptian) and falsely translated Egyptian funeral papyri into the 'Book of Abraham', authored by.. well, Abraham. What he didn't count on was the hieroglyphics being decoded. Likewise, Scientology is the latest religion to be exposed. Xenu and the volcanoes! Sounds old-school sci-fi to me. But a pattern exists. Add a thousand or so years to outrageous and scientifically impossible described events and they become more and more difficult to disprove. It's as if the intervening time has added layers upon layers of legitimacy and an aura of permanency to these movements. They become more difficult to counter due to a lack of contemporarily neutral sources. Who was in Mecca and Medina in the time of Mohammed to dispute his claims and teachings? They were either killed, converted, or forced into hiding. Either way, there are no contrary accounts that have survived. In Jesus' time, you had a restless, but hopelessly divided Jewish population under Roman or puppet-ruler administration. I think it's a mistake for atheists to deny Jesus' very existence. It's not a leap of faith by any means to believe that there was a self-styled Jewish messiah who hailed out of Nazareth who lived from 1 to 33 AD. The lack of contemporary sources from anyone outside of his own circle of followers makes for an intricate counter-witness. All you can do is cast doubt on the very miracles claimed based on their face value... Christians can (and do) quote from their own accounts. Josephus makes a passing reference to Jesus, and so we have a neutral confirmation of the existence of Christ.
It's testimony to the power of the message that three major religions all worship the same desert deity to this very day. If you consider the fact that the only real differences between the three are Jesus and Mohammed, it's a shame that all of this fighting couldn't have been avoided. For my part, I couldn't place my entire life in the hands of a theology which is based on unconfirmed miracles and higher powers. Come down here and prove it to me, and I'll become a believer. I guess that's what makes me an agnostic.

More of a general attack on socialism than anything. Now is where someone quotes Thatcher's line about the problem with socialism is that you always run out of someone else's money.

Has Anyone Seen "Prometheus"?
by Low-Key Lysmith ini loved it!
but then, it went right along with my own personal beliefs concerning mankind's origins, so i'm a little biased.. wondering what a religious person's thoughts would be?.

I saw it on pirated DVD recently. The translation was sub-par, so I swiched the overdub off and watched it in English. I think it's important to not watch movies like this as some sort of fanboy. It was entertaining and I was somewhat emotionally involved since I've seen the Alien flicks. A work of art it is not. But it is better than what is out there right now. As the movie is meant to do, it raises even more questions while teasing you with the answers to your pre-existing ones. I did notice how a woman with a Caesarian/abortion ran an awful lot with staples in her stomach. With that in mind I expected her to die from the bleeding. But since this was already covered, I have some questions of my own.
How did David know that the Engineers were headed back to Earth to wipe everyone out? When he was in the 'map room', he specifically located Earth and grabbed it. That was why it appeared near the chair. He obviously knows something he didn't reveal, and/or sought to manupulate the humans into destroying the alien ship. Why?
What did David say to the Engineer that made him immediately turn hostile? We know the Engineer understood it, because he perked up when David spoke, but seemingly didn't understand English. The linguist hired for the film (he's the man who appears as David's language coach in the Karakul hat) translated it online: 'This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life’. According to the same source, there was an extended dialogue between David and the Engineer which was cut, but will be restored for the DVD release.
The surviving Engineer was asleep for at least 2000 years (the carbon sample from the dead Engineer dated that far). They woke him, and here were mutants according to his viewpoint, and it immediately became obvious that his crew was killed and that the bio-weapons were exposed. What did he do? I don't think he was headed to Earth on a kill mission. He was going home to warn his people of the danger not only of the exposed bio-weapons, but that one of their experiments have evolved so much that they were now visiting the bio-weapons storage facility and posing an unknown threat. David is the only source we have that they were heading to Earth. Also, is the 2000 year gap related to the crucifiction of Jesus?
The planets are not the same as in Alien. In Alien, the planet was LV-426. In Prometheus, the planet is LV-223. The prominent headlands in Prometheus do not match the rocky planet in Alien. Also, there were several other 'pyramids' on LV-223 which were not found in Alien. The ship in Alien featured a dead Engineer with his chest burst open. However, in Prometheus, the Engineer suffered that fate on the humans' lifeboat.
Why did David seem to want to go to Earth? Was he programmed to deliver the specimen at all costs even if his 'father' died? It seemed he was ambivalent about going where Shaw wanted - to make more contact with the Engineers.

How do you deal with your "down" time?
by compound complex inby that, i don't mean so much what you do in your leisure time but how you manage the freedom to choose what you will or will not do.
off the wt treadmill, i no longer feel guilty about what is now my neglect of theocratic activity; however, after a nonstop week such as i have just lived through (barely), i am doing nothing, going nowhere, and accepting no new obligations (for the moment).
i can stare at the sky, enjoy the beautiful day and not worry that demons are rushing to fill the void in my empty skull.. you?.

When I left the first time, I went to live with a friend who played guitar. We started our own 'band', and within it I played bass. We played a few gigs out in los campos and a couple in the city. I loved the night life and the new people I met. After about a year, I ended up leaving my country and was eventually out of practice. Shortly after I came back here, I started renewing old friends and acquaintances and picked up the hobby again. The same old friend gave me a Spanish guitar during my clandestine birthday party a couple of years ago and I've been playing ever since. It's quite soothing and creative for me now, whereas before it was a way to get out and have fun. When I get my own place, I'm going electric.

A DC would be the worst place to ease a 'worldly' person in. Very few business seminars last for that long, and at least most of those are readily catered and/or have cafeteria/snack facilities onsite. Add in the fact that there are many familes attending with small children who are expected to just be silent during the program, and you have a veritable hodge-podge of stalwarts, people who are trying hard to convince themselves that they are enjoying it, and people who want nothing better than to leave and have no one notice.
The problem for the Society now is that before when they had the translation version of the NWT, regular Witnesses had no ready access to materials to make an independent research. They'd have to go to a library and purposely get it. It's much easier now with the net. This might explain some of the blatant reticence surrounding anyone attempting to research the NWT. Just type in "New World Translation" into a browser, and you'll get about 99 out of 100 negative responses.

I thought that once I started on the pre-natal vitamins the sickness would go away, but it lingered on. I soon realised a new feeling: feeling like I was going to throw up, but couldn't. It faded after my 14th week. I have two and a half months to go, and I'm feeling ready. Once I finish a few projects, I'll go on leave. I've taken to playing music in my flat, and it soothes both souls in the room. Hang in there. It'll get better.

No, I think sbf was doing just fine without my help.
You're illustrating your vanity and vain nature so perfectly now, I can just let you go on and let it speak for itself. I've never been as roused as you are right now, and I'm used to having to answer several belligerent posters at once. You get two, and you can't handle it.
